Mike Halliwell’s Political and Public Service Activities

  • In 1968 Mike Halliwell opposed the Vietnam War by organizing a slate of delegates to run in the Republican presidential primary.  This “Free Choice” slate was leading Governor Reagan’s Favorite Son delegation 47% to 42% when the California Supreme Court ruled it off the ballot, by upholding a discriminatory ballot access rule which required 50% more signatures than for a Democrat slate.

  • In 1970 Mike Halliwell was a Republican State Senate nominee and a Reform Coalition running mate of Marin County Republican State Senator Peter Behr.

  • In 1972 Mike Halliwell supported Congressman Pete McCloskey’s challenge to President Nixon’s re-nomination and was the organizing Chairman for Pete’s California slate of delegates. After President Nixon’s obstruction of justice in the Watergate scandal became public, Mike publicly opposed Nixon’s re-election.

  • In 1974 Mike Halliwell supported Governor Reagan’s veto of gerrymandered congressional and state legislative districts as an Amicus Curiae in Legislative v Reinecke; in 1975 as a Plaintiff in Ripon Society v National Republican Party Mike Halliwell opposed giving California a smaller share of delegates at the Republican National Convention than its Electoral College vote or proportion of the nationwide Republican presidential vote.

  • In 1982-1987 Mike Halliwell’s lawsuit (Halliwell v Eu) opposed the Rose Bird Supreme Court’s invalidation of referenda wherein voters were more than 60% opposed to Democrat sponsored gerrymanders of all of California’s districts.

  • In 1991 Mike’s wife Betty was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of breast cancer for which Mike developed an effective treatment consisting of long-term chemotherapy and hormonal therapy.  Mike has continued his breast cancer work with the help of the Marin County Public Health Department’s computerized data base, to help combat Marin County’s extremely high breast cancer rate.

  • In 1999 Mike and Betty Halliwell established Books for Peace (CT-114553), a charity which has sent thousands of donated books to Peace Corps projects in Ethiopa, Zimbabwe, the Philippines, Ukraine and other countries.

  • In 2004 Mike Halliwell ended his 36 year career of teaching in the California State University system to fight for health care reform. In his 2006 congressional race Mike won 43% of the primary vote, he is unopposed in his 2008 primary.

Lynn Woolsey’s Favoritism vs Mike Halliwell’s Honest Politics

  • Dick Spotswood tells why “It’s likely too late to stop the Rohnert Park casino.” Local opposition was rendered futile because under federal legislation initiated by Woolsey “[casinos] are allowed anywhere in both Marin and Sonoma on the contrived basis that every square foot of both counties is the Miwoks’ ancestral homeland.” Spotswood notes: “THE FIRST North Bay candidate to acknowledge receiving campaign money from a gaming tribe is Congress member Lynn Woolsey. The Petaluma Democrat has now disclosed a $4,000 contribution from the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria.” (Marin Independent Journal, May 7, 2006) Mike Halliwell has documented how Congresswoman Woolsey’s pretended speech of October 26, 2000 in opposition to Indian casino gaming (which her legislation authorized) was a total fraud.

  • Guy Kovner discusses the incumbent’s reward for a $4,000 campaign contributor: “Woolsey is embroiled in a controversy over her backing a ferry project at Port Sonoma pushed by a private investor who is also a campaign contributor. The project, which did not have the support of any North Coast public agency, won $20 million last year in a massive federal transportation bill, three months after Woolsey wrote to a key Democrat urging support for the ferry service.” (Press Democrat, May 21, 2006)  Mike Halliwell opposes this sort of “pork barrel” spending, which threatens to bankrupt our nation.

  • Neither Lynn Woolsey nor any other woman can be said to be “soft on rapists.”  Yet Woolsey gave a higher priority to insider favoritism when Stewart Pearson (one of her campaign volunteers and son of a member of her staff) used house cleaning chemicals to smother and then rape a 17-year old Terra Linda woman. She wrote a letter on Congressional stationery pointing out to Judge Terrence Boren that he should consider Pearson’s “supportive family” and his “promising life ahead of him” and perhaps hand down a lenient sentence.  Mike Halliwell supports appropriate sentences for heinous crime and Equal Justice Under Law.

  • Woolsey opposed community protection from dangerous criminal aliens (2006 Roll Call #465); Halliwell supports deporting such criminals. Halliwell supports helping employers to verify lawful residency (HR 4088, 2007); Woolsey does not. Woolsey supports illegal immigrant public college tuition preference over out-of-state college students (HR 1275, 2007); Halliwell opposes such discrimination. Halliwell supports banning drivers licenses for illegal entrants (HR4176, 2007) Woolsey does not. Woolsey supported giving 50,000 visas by lottery (2005 Roll Call #653); Mike Halliwell would give these slots to bona fide Mexican citizens.
